A New “Scrooge” opens in Woodstock, December 12
“The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge,” Mark Brown’s comic, prickly adaptation of Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol,” opens in Woodstock this month. Bird-On-A-Cliff Theatre Company is staging the work, appropriately, in the Courtroom at the Woodstock Town Hall. Show dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 12-14 and 19-21. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m.
According to the director, David Aston-Reese, this piece of theater “has been billed as ‘The Trial of the Century!’ Just one year after his remarkable transformation, Ebenezer Scrooge is back to his old ways. Here he is suing Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future for breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder and the intentional infliction of emotional distress. Miserly Scrooge of course represents himself. The ghosts employ the savvy, clever barrister Solomon Rothschild to defend them, and ‘one by one, each of the unforgettable characters -- Bob Cratchit, Scrooge's nephew Fred, philanthropist Sara Anne Wainwright, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future -- take the stand to give their account of ‘the night in question.’”
Bob Sheridan plays Scrooge opposite Oliver Wyman’s Solomon Rothschild. David Aston-Reese, Joe Bongiorno, Ella Cattabiani, Bethany Goldpaugh Brown, Elli Michaels, Tad Richards, and Dan Green fill the other colorful character roles. While the show is intended for all audiences, people with small children should be advised.
