TheaterSounds Playreadings Presents THE SECRET MASK, December 19

This holiday season TheaterSounds will give a staged reading of a play about a family – an engaging, complicated, hilarious and moving real-life family – written by a son in memory of his father. The Secret Mask by Canadian playwright Rick Chafe was a finalist for the 2014 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. The reading will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills on Saturday, December 19 at 7:30pm.

In this tragic/comically funny play, George was a toddler when his father walked out on his family. Forty years later, he gets a call from a hospital in another city to come get his father, whose speech and memory have been scrambled by a stroke. To make sense of a missing and mysterious past, father and son must battle their way through a broken looking glass of language and fractured memories.

Nicola Sheara directs a cast of three professional actors: Victor Truro* who has had an extensive career in film, stage and television (Criminal Intent, The Sopranos, Law and Order, soaps); and Melissa Hurst*, who has appeared on television (Law and Order, Guiding Light), off-Broadway, and in films.
James Prendergast*, who also has long stage and screen credits and has performed in other TheaterSounds productions, will be familiar to many regular patrons.

“In this performance,” said Sheara, “Victor Truro* and James Prendergast* play father and son, while Melissa Hurst* dons the roles of several supporting characters. This is our fourth production this season,” she added, “and I
want to say how delighted I am with the enthusiasm our growing audience has shown our playreading series.”

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills is located at 320 Sawkill Road, 1.5 miles north of Washington Avenue and 1.5 miles south of Route 209, in Kingston. Admission is by donation. For more information, call 845-657-6303.
