SummerStar Theatre presents DOUBT: A PARABLE — Middletown
SummerStar Theatre opens its 15th season this June with sixperformances of “Doubt: A Parable”
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SummerStar Theatre opens its 15th season this June with six
performances of “Doubt: A Parable,” a winner of Pulitzer and Tony awards written by John Patrick Shanley that touches upon power, allegiance, hierarchy and the loneliness of faith in the 1960s.
Shanely’s play portrays the early 1960s as a time when the terms of the social and religious contract shifted. The church was trying to maintain a place for its traditions in a suddenly unfamiliar and irreverent world. With the assassination of President Kennedy, the calming promise of Camelot gave way to an age of uncertainty–both without and within the church –and a struggle for the future of the church is being waged on a personal level.
New York Newsday raved about the play: “How splendid it feels to be trusted with such passionate, exquisite ambiguity unlike anything we have seen from this prolific playwright so far. Blunt yet subtle, manipulative but full of empathy for all sides, the play is set in 1964 but could not be more timely. In just ninety fast-moving minutes, Shanley creates four blazingly individual people. DOUBT is a lean, potent drama…passionate, exquisite, important and engrossing.”
