MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SummerStar Theatre opens its 15th season this June with six
performances of “Doubt: A Parable,” a winner of Pulitzer and Tony awards written by John Patrick Shanley that touches upon power, allegiance, hierarchy and the loneliness of faith in the 1960s.

Shanely’s play portrays the early 1960s as a time when the terms of the social and religious contract shifted. The church was trying to maintain a place for its traditions in a suddenly unfamiliar and irreverent world. With the assassination of President Kennedy, the calming promise of Camelot gave way to an age of uncertainty--both without and within the church --and a struggle for the future of the church is being waged on a personal level.

New York Newsday raved about the play: “How splendid it feels to be trusted with such passionate, exquisite ambiguity unlike anything we have seen from this prolific playwright so far. Blunt yet subtle, manipulative but full of empathy for all sides, the play is set in 1964 but could not be more timely. In just ninety fast-moving minutes, Shanley creates four blazingly individual people. DOUBT is a lean, potent drama...passionate, exquisite, important and engrossing.”

SummerStar Theatre returns to its usual home in the Orange Hall Theatre for the 2014 season after spending last summer across campus.  Friday and Saturday evening performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. June 20-21 and 27-28. Sunday matinees are on tap for 3 p.m. June 22 and 29. There will be a “Talk Back” with the actors and director following both Saturday night performances. All are invited. The cast features Susan Watson Turner, Sarah Fields, Jim Quinlan and Marie DuSault.
