Additional Information

Local artist and sometimes-curator Nat Thomas has reached out to artists of many disciplines to curate a new group exhibit, Learning You Are the Vessel, which opens with an Artist Reception on Saturday, September 23 at 4:00p in the Walt Meade Gallery of the Roxbury Arts Center, located at 5025 Vega Mountain Road in Roxbury. The exhibit will remain open to the public through Saturday, November 4.

Learning You Are the Vessel features works that explore matters of personal story and memories, the artist as model, and how we fabricate identity. The seed for this exhibit was planted in curator Nat Thomas’ brain decades ago when he read Tom Robbins novel Another Roadside Attraction. Robbins wrote, “Human beings were invented by water as a device for transporting itself from one place to another.” This idea of people being a vessel started to intrigue Thomas and he created a quilt with the concept. Since then, Thomas has seen a lot of work that he feels exemplifies the idea of the vessel.

“Nat Thomas is not only a talented artist but also a visionary curator,” saysAnn Schwed, Grants and Community Coordinator of the Roxbury Arts Group. “Learning You Are the Vessel brings together a gifted group of artists, and marries their work in a way the artists themselves probably haven’t considered.”

The opening Artist Reception for Learning You Are the Vessel on Saturday, September 23 at 4:00p, as well as visits to the gallery for the duration of the exhibit which closes Saturday, November 4, are free and open to all.
