Additional Information

‘Feeding the Hudson Valley’, will bring people together to enjoy a free lunch prepared with rescued and/or recovered food that has been saved from going to waste. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about food waste prevention and food rescue. The event is a celebration of positive solutions to the issue of food waste. In addition to a free lunch, the event will include live music, expert speakers and local chef demonstrations. The event will be held on the Walkway Over the Hudson on Saturday October 8, 2016, 11:00am-3:00pm in conjunction with the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley ‘Walk to Fight Hunger’. While some benefit from the great bounty of fresh foods the Hudson Valley has to offer, there are many people in our region who suffer from food insecurity. This means they lack easy and regular access to quality food and may frequently go hungry. While 40 percent of food in the United States goes uneaten, 1 in 7 people struggles with hunger. Food waste in New York totals about 18% of what makes up our waste stream while across Dutchess, Orange, Putnam and Ulster counties 1 in 10 people receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and barely get enough to eat. The event is being organized by The Hudson Valley Regional Council, Feedback, Dutchess Outreach, Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine and others.Funding proved by the NYS Pollution Prevention Institute and the Rockefeller Foundation.
