Additional Information

This concert, part of the award-winning Music Makers concert series, features Wolfgang’s Revenge, an acoustic quartet comprising world-class musicians Jeff Schmich on mandolin and percussion, Lynn Volpe on flute, Mark Murphy on double bass and cello, and Larry Newcomb on guitar. This group performs their original compositions distinctively fusing elements from jazz, classical, Caribbean, and American “roots” musical forms. Sweet!

Schmich has been studying mandolin for over thirty years. Playing also percussion, guitar, and banjo, he was an original member of "The Pep Boys" Bluegrass band, a member of the "Brewflies," and also founded "The Evening Edition String Quartet."

Murphy grew up in a musical family and began playing cello in third grade and moved on to other various instruments. After college graduation, he dove into professional music with Walt Michael, Tom McCreesh and Company, with whom he’s appeared on Nashville Network’s “Fire on the Mountain” and SPR’s “Prairie Home Companion.” He performed with Pilobilus Dance Company and has headlined shows ranging from the Carter Family fold to Lincoln Center, performing with Vanaver Caravan, including performing at the United Nations, and was part of the cast filmed for the historic dance reconstruction, “Boston Fancy,” which was inducted into the National Archives. Murphy has backed up Guy Davis on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and has toured and recorded in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Volpe has been playing Flute for about eighteen years. After many years of NYSSMA and SCMEA in her high school career, Volpe joined the Long Island Flute Club and played in many flute ensembles. She has also studied with some of the top flute instructors on Long Island, including Mark Barton and Jennifer Hailey. In addition to playing the flute, Volpe has been in jazz bands performing on the Tenor Saxophone.

Newcomb played lead guitar in the touring bands of hit makers, including Peter Noone, Leslie Gore, Lou Christie, Billy J. Kramer, Tommy Cash, Darlene Austin, Tom Grant, and Jimmy Payne. Currently, Newcomb performs in solo, duo, trio, and quartet settings in New York City, New York State, and Florida State. He also teaches guitar students of all ages, experience levels, and stylistic preferences at Newcomb Guitar School in New York City. Newcomb founded the Newcomb Guitar Method in 1985 and is the Director of Guitar Ensembles at Our Lady of Pompeii School in New York City.
