Additional Information

This award-winning independent film from director Jeremy Sims, based on a true story, is about Rex (Michael Caton), an older cab driver who has never left the isolated Australian mining town of Broken Hill in his life.

Living in the far west outback of New South Wales, he has also spent his life not getting too close to anyone.

He’s additionally too stubborn and prejudiced to acknowledge his love for Polly (Ningali Lawford-Wolf), a black woman across the street who’s his secret nighttime companion.

One day, Rex learns he has terminal cancer and doesn’t have long to live.

Not wanting to be forced to rely on anyone, least of all Polly, he decides to leave his home and drive alone 1,900 miles across the continent to Darwin, Northern Territory, where a recently passed euthanasia law and a willing Dr. Nicole Farmer (Jacki Weaver) will allow him to die on his own terms.

But on his epic journey he discovers that before he can end his life he’s got to live it, and to live it he’s got learn to share it.

“Poignantly satisfying,” says critic Bruce Demara in The Toronto Star.

“Remains upbeat without betraying its rough-around-the-edges cast of characters,” says David Lewis in the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Sims balances sentiment, wry comedy and debate as he immerses audiences in a sensitive story,” says Sarah Ward in Screen International.
