Ulster County police were called to the scene after a car ran through a local business.

Wednesday afternoon, Saugerties Police responded to a 911 call that a pickup truck ran through the front of Sam's Mart on Route 9W in Saugerties. Upon arrival, John T. Smith, 50, from Saugerties told offices he lost control of his vehicle and his brakes stopped working which caused his truck to jump the curb and smash into the front door of the Sam's Mart.

During their investigation, officers determined that Smith was intoxicated. He was taken into custody and processed at police headquarters. Smith has been charged with Misdemeanors of Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated with a Blood Alcohol Content greater than .08%. He was also charged with the violations of operating a motor vehicle with inadequate brakes and consumption/possession of an open alcoholic beverage.

Smith was released to a third party and is scheduled to appear before the Town of Saugerties Justice Court on December 16, 2015.

Sam’s Mart sustained little damage and remains open. No one was injured at the time of the incident.
