The DOT is warning Route 9 drivers that they will experience stoppages that could last up to 10 minutes at a time until the end of next month.

Starting today, December 20,  and lasting through Friday, January 27, there will be planned traffic stoppages on Route 9 between Pine Street and Fox Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. Crews will be working on the road between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, weather permitting.

The idea of having to stop for 10 minutes on Route 9 does not sit well with most motorists. While the DOT characterizes these stoppages as "brief," 10 minutes can feel like a lifetime when sitting in traffic, especially during the busy holiday shopping season.

Regardless of the inconvenience, drivers are being asked to use caution when traveling through the area. Be on the lookout for work personnel and flaggers directing traffic. Oh, and the DOT also warns in their press release that the law does not take kindly to road rage incidents:

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
