A very dangerous sex offender secretly moved within walking distance of a Hudson Valley day care, a boarding school and at least two other schools.

On Tuesday, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department arrested 41 year-old Juan A. Rodriguez for failure to report a change of address and failure to verify his address every 90 days, in violation of New York State Corrections Law.

An investigation by the Town of Poughkeepsie police, in conjunction with the Dutchess County Office of Probation and the City of Newburgh Police Department revealed that Rodriguez, a Level-3 sex offender, moved from the City of Newburgh to a home on Spackenkill Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie without reporting.

As Hudson Valley Post did some investigating, we learned that Rodriguez’s new unreported address was within walking distance of the Martha Lawrence School, a day care, Spackenkill High School, Orville A. Todd Middle School and Oakwood Friends School, a boarding school for grades 6-12.

All of the schools were less than half a mile from Rodriguez’s alleged new home. The Martha Lawrence day care was less than one-tenth of a mile from Rodriguez.

According to the New York State sex offender database, Rodriguez was convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl in 1994. He was sentenced to two to four years in prison. He also goes by the first name Anthony or Junior. He also at one point went by the name Eric Fotanz and/or George Fontanez.

Rodriguez was convicted for not registering as a sex offender in 2002, police say.

As a Level-3 sex offender, Rodriguez poses a high risk of a repeat offense and a threat to public safety exists.

He was arraigned in the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. Rodriguez is due in court on March 6.
