Ironically, Szeliga has made over 100 DUI/DWI arrests as an officer, which is why he was to be presented  the award in the first place. Some are questioning if he drove drunk to the conference, though the officer denies this.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said, “It was wrong, and again, one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard of. When I first heard about it, that was (what) my reaction was. ‘Come on, you’ve got to be kidding me. Really?’”

Officer Szeliga was confronted by his supervisors, who sent him back to his hotel room.

Szeliga was reportedly reprimanded and given one day of paid suspension. He has also been forced to write an apology letter to the supervisors for being belligerent with them.
