In a another case of political correctness gone too far, the University of Ottawa has cancelled a yoga class because of British colonialism?

Jen Scharf had taught the class at the Centre of Students with Disabilities since 2008, Scharf recently revealed emails from the school’s Student Federation that questioned the class for its apparent ties to “cultural genocide” during Britain’s occupation of India.

One email sent to Scharf said, “Yoga has been under a lot of controversy lately due to how it is being practiced and what practices from what cultures... they are being taken from."

“Many of these cultures... have experienced oppression, cultural genocide and diasporas due to colonialism and western supremacy, and we need to be mindful of this and how we express ourselves and while practicing yoga.”

According to the NY Daily News, Scharf was informed of the student union's decision on September 7, in an email that simply stated "our centre has chosen not to do yoga for programming this year."

When Scharf searched for answers on the decision, she received more emails from the student Federation , one claiming students and volunteers “feel uncomfortable with how we are doing yoga while we claim to be inclusive at the same time.”

Scharf pressed the issue, even going as far offering to rename the class “stretching for mental health”. This wasn't good enough for the federation though.

In an interview with Radio Canada Saturday, Roméo Ahimakin, the president of the Student Federation, admitted that no formal complaints were ever filed regarding the class.
