If you are a Central Hudson customer you may be the target of an elaborate billing scam.

In a press release, Central Hudson is warning its customers of scammers who are targeting Hudson Valley residents. The utility has reported that some of its customers have been contacted over the telephone by persons claiming to represent Central Hudson. The scammers explain that the customer's account is past due and instructs them how to pay their bill by money order or wire transfer.

Customers are bullied into paying by being told that power will be shut off. Central Hudson claims that the scam has been targeted at residential and commercial customers. If you receive a call saying that your bill is overdue, Central Hudson suggests that you hang up and call them at (845) 452-2700 to confirm that it was really from the utility company.
