The driver in a Saugerties car crash that killed four men won't face criminal charges, the Ulster County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.

Driver Meredith McSpirit, 20, was the only survivor of the crash.

On August 26, 2015, police and emergency rescue workers responded to Dock Street in Saugerties for a report of an overturned vehicle. The car failed to make a right turn and traveled over a driveway and then across a private road before plunging down a 110-foot embankment. The car finally came to rest, upside down, after hitting a house. No one was inside the home at the time.

The vehicle's four passengers, Jonte Clark, Dante Crump, Adam “Jeff” McQueen and Kaireem Meeks Jr, all from Kingston, were killed in the crash.

According to Ulster County District Attorney announced Holley Carnright, after hearing evidence for several days from a number of witnesses, an Ulster grand jury determined not to file criminal charges relating to the incident.

At the center of the investigation was whether the driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. The grand jury found no evidence of impairment existed. The jury heard evidence from people who interviewed McSpirit prior to the crash, as well as medical personal and police who assisted her after the crash. Laboratory analysis of McSpirit’s blood was also available.

“I find the investigation conducted by the Town of Saugerties Police Department to be thorough and professional,” Carnright said. New York State Police also assisted. “We have spoken with many of the survivors of the four young men who were killed. It is troubling, at best, not to be able to give them a concrete explanation as to how this terrible, terrible, tragedy occurred. The collective prayers and sympathies of my staff and the many investigators involved in this matter go out to them, small solace in the face of such a loss.”
