A Hudson Valley high school student has been charged with arson after police say he set fire to the school on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old boy was charged with third-degree arson, which is a felony.

The Times Herald Record reports that a 15-year-old student was questioned by police after they say he ignited a garbage can inside a boys' restroom at Ellenville High School. The blaze set off fire alarms and caused an evacuation of the building. Fire officials say the bathroom was quickly extinguished and that there were no injuries.

School administration, working with police, identified possible suspects. After questioning two students, a third child was identified as the one responsible for the fire. The 15-year-old boy was charged with third-degree arson, which is a felony. Other students were detained but released pending a further investigation into the incident.

The boy who was charged with arson will appear in Ulster County Family Court early next month. In the meantime he has been released to a guardian. There is no indication whether he will be allowed back in school before his court date.
