Police are responding to a local elementary school that is currently in lock-down.

The Times Herald Record reports that Maple Hill Elementary School in the Town of Walkill received an undisclosed threat and precautions are being taken. The Kindergarden through grade 5 school is closed to everyone except police at this time.

The Record reports that police cars with lights on have been arriving at the school and security has closed the entrance road.

A message on the school's website reads as follows:

Maple hill elementary school is on lockdown and is locked out. A threat was called into the building. Police are investigating.

All children are safe and secure. We will have an official statement once law enforcement completely clears and releases the building.

The website also shows that a field day was scheduled today for grades K-5 until 2pm.

In an update, the Times Herald Record says state police Capt. Brendan Casey has addressed parents, saying that a threat involving a weapon was reported to the school around 9am, initiating the lockdown. Police are combing the building and have not confirmed the presence of a weapon as of yet.

Once the investigation is complete, the school will allow parents on site and bring home their children if they wish to do so.

This is an ongoing story and we will update this page as more information is made available.
