The Zika Virus was reported in another Hudson Valley individual today.

This brings the total number of New Yorkers with the virus up to 11, with two of them right here in our area. Two weeks ago an Orange County resident tested positive for the virus after traveling to South America.

The latest case is an unidentified woman living in Rockland County. Like the Orange County patient, this case of Zika Virus was also contracted during a visit to South America. The woman is not pregnant and officials believe that the disease was caused by a mosquito bite while in South America.

Because of the current cold temperatures, there is no mosquito activity in the Hudson Valley right now, so the chances of catching Zika is slim. The Journal News reports that the Department of Health will start collecting mosquitoes in Putnam, Orange, Sullivan and Dutchess counties to test for signs of the virus.

Recently, we spoke to pharmacist Kelcey Noble from Health Quest about the danger of Zika spreading to the Hudson Valley. She shared five important things everyone show know about the current outbreak.
