A beloved chef from the Hudson Valley, who's said to be in the U.S. legally, was detained by immigration officials.

Early Wednesday morning, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) detained Juan Carlos Alonso Vasquez, a chef at The Anchor in Kingston.

"Hands down one of the best human beings I have ever met," The Anchor Owner Brandy Walters wrote on Facebook.

Vasquez who goes by the name Charlie is a green card holder, a legal permanent resident and pays taxes, according to comments on Facebook.

He was detained by ICE over a DWI from 7 years ago,  according to Facebook posts.

Friends of Vasquez are hoping that letters of support can be used to help free the Kingston chef.

"I am calling on my community for support and help," Walters said. "I was informed that letters from the community could help leverage his freedom. Please write a letter and drop it off or mail it to The Anchor."

You can mail a letter to The Anchor at 744 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401. You can also email a letter to booking@theanchorkingston.com. If you stop in person, The Anchor will have paper and pens available.
