People across the Northeast and the Northern Plains were treated Monday night to a rare display of the aurora borealis. The astronomical phenomenon is usually seen only in the extreme northern and southern latitudes, but Monday's showing brought the famous 'northern lights' to areas where they're not normally witnessed.

 

 

Some reports of the aurora borealis came in as far south as Virginia and Kansas. The most vivid display took place close to the border between the United States and Canada, where the aurora was able to be seen easily with the naked eye. The phenomenon was caused powerful geomagnetic storm

The Space Weather Prediction Center stated that another solar storm is forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday, which could bring more showings across parts of North America.
