A local boy has been accused of punching an elderly woman to death in a cold-blooded fit of rage. The Times Herald Record reports Tristen Kurilla of Wayne County has been accused of homicide and will be charged as an adult. Police say the 10-year-old punched 90-year-old Helen Novak numerous times in the throat after placing a cane against her neck.

The boy was visiting his grandfather who was caring for Novak in Damascus, Pennsylvania which is right across the New York border near Monticello. The Record quotes a news release from the Wayne County DA that details the alleged incident. Kurilla's mother told New York State Police that her son got angry and lost his temper before grabbing a cane and putting it to the elderly woman's neck. The boy then told an officer he had pulled the woman down on the bed and punched her numerous times until she bled from her mouth.

After initially denying he had anything to do with it, the boy was quoted by his grandfather as eventually confessing to the crime. After an autopsy was performed the death was ruled a homicide and injuries were consistent with the boy's story.

The Record notes that homicide is excluded from the juvenile code, therefore the 10-year-old will was charged as an adult and jailed with no bail. A preliminary hearing is set for October 22.
