The NY State Department of Taxation and Finance said that more than 2 million rebate checks started going out Monday, according to WGRZ.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Legislator established the Property-Tax Freeze Credit last year, and it's in the second of its third year. It provides rebates on the growth in property taxes, if you and your schools and municipalities qualified.

Because of a very complex process it will be months before all the checks are mailed.

So what are the eligibility requirements?

  • A property must be the homeowner's primary residence outside New York City to be eligible, and taxable household income must be $500,000 or less.
  • Gannett's Albany Bureau created a searchable database to see if your taxing entities complied.
  • About 2,000 government entities followed the rules and thus their homeowners are eligible for rebates.
