As print journalism struggles across the country, another local newspaper in the Hudson Valley may be looking for a new home.

Back in 2009 the Poughkeepsie Journal sold its historic newspaper building in downtown Poughkeepsie after streamlining operations and outsourcing their printing to another Gannett News department in White Plains. After the sale, the newspaper continued to lease space in the building.

The Poughkeepsie Journal is just one of many newspapers across the country that were forced to downsize their business in world of Internet and cable news. Editor and Publisher reported at the time of the sale that high profile newspapers like the New York Times had also been forced to sell their headquarters and lease space from he new owners to continue their operations.

On Thursday the Daily Freeman became the latest newspaper to announce that their headquarters are now up for sale. The Freeman sold their building in 2013 after eliminating 58 local jobs and outsourcing their printing operations to Albany. With only 30 employees currently working for the paper, they've been leasing the building. But now, the building's owner has put it up for sale.

The Daily Freeman's publisher, Robert O'Leary, says that the newspaper will continue no matter where the current staff winds up. In an interview with one of his own reporters, O'Leary said that he would ultimately like to lease a smaller portion of the current building, since much of it is currently unused.

The 26,000 square foot building and its 3 acres of property have been priced at $1.7 million. Of course, it's unknown if the eventual owners of the property will even want to continue leasing the space to the Daily Freeman. Regardless, O'Leary says that the Kingston paper will continue on.
