Now that Orange County has voted to raise the legal smoking age another Hudson Valley county may be following suit.

Last year the Orange County legislature voted to raise smoking age from 18 to 21. That law is expected to go into effect on June 1. Now another Hudson Valley county is attempting to enact similar legislation.

Sullivan County lawmakers are expected to be presented with a proposal to raise the smoking age to 21 by the end of the month. Spectrum News is reporting that Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez is drafting the legislation that would mirror the new Orange County Law.

In New York the legal age to buy tobacco is 18 unless you live in New York City or Suffolk, Albany, Schenectady, Chautauqua, Cortland, and soon Orange county, where the age is 21. Nassau and Onondaga counties recently voted to raise the age to 19.

There is no word yet of changes being proposed to the current tobacco regulations in Dutchess or Ulster counties.
