According to reports, Amazon studios will be producing, as well acquiring original movies for theatrical release, as well as digital release through Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Amazon is expecting to produce 12 movies per year, and release the titles on Amazon Prime just 4-8 weeks after their theatrical release, which is very quickly.

The movies will be indie-style type flicks, with budgets ranging from $5 - $25 million.

This move from amazon stems from the moves that Netflix has been making in terms of their movies. Netflix recently sign a 4-year deal with Adam Sandler, and is set to release the sequel to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

According to Amazon Studios VP,  Roy Price:

“We look forward to expanding our production efforts into feature films. Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
