A black bear has been spotted roaming around the Dutchess County area. Here's what residents need to know to stay safe.

The East Fishkill Police department share these photos of a black bear that has been spotted around the area of Fishkill Road and Route 376. According to a Facebook post but the police department, the bear appears to be moving in a northerly direction.

Authorities are advising residents to bring pets and children inside, and be on alert while conducting outdoor activities. If a resident observes the bear, they are asked to seek shelter and contact the police with the animal's location.

The New York State DEC says the leading cause of bear sightings is uncovered garbage cans and bird feeders. While bears can live off of food found in wooded areas, they will come into residential areas if food is more readily available. Residents in the areas where black bears are spotted are advised to cover their garbage and remove bird feeders.
