An odd formation of two helicopters and an airplane was spotted over the Hudson Valley last week. Maybe you can help us figure out what it was.

The video shows what appear to be two Blackhawk type helicopters escorting a small single engine plane. The driver of the car is headed north on route 9, so the aircraft appear to be headed south.

While the video is somewhat hard to make out, I saw the same formation just east of Poughkeepsie on my way home Tuesday and thought nothing of it until YouTube user TROndrey reached out to the radio station via social media. After doing some research, there is no common formation or reason found that these aircraft would be flying together. Not to mention the fact, it is uncommon to see aircraft of any kind in that area.

Could the two helicopters have been escorting a VIP? Perhaps the plane flew into restricted airspace and the choppers are escorting it back to the airstrip where it took off from? We don't know, but our imagination is running wild.

You can learn more about common military aircraft formations at CombatAirCraft.com. But you won't find what we saw over the Hudson Valley Tuesday there.
