A local park with a little-known historical significance is finally getting the recognition many believe it deserves.

Those in the City of Poughkeepsie are familiar with College Hill. The small park sits between Violet Ave and Smith St just a stone's throw from the entrance to the Walkway Over The Hudson.

Mid Hudson News reports that the Poughkeepsie Common Council, after years of deliberation, have finally granted the park its landmark status. Historians say the park was once an important educational site, with an actual college sitting on the land which gave the park it's curious name.

An early visitor to the park once referred to the land as the "throned queen" which some believe is the source of Poughkeepsie's peculiar nickname, "The Queen City."

Currently there is a golf course operating at College Hill and some concern was raised that the new designation would have a negative impact on business. After some reassurance from the Common Council, the ruling officially passed seven to one.
