This Hudson Valley brewery is family run and family friendly, however, their beer is far from kids' stuff.

Brandon from North River Hops and Brewing stopped by The Boris & Robyn Show and brought along his wife and 4-year-old daughter. Running the brewery is not only a full time job for Brandon, apparently it's also a family affair.

Our beer of the week is the North River Imperial Coffee Porter. A rich, dark beer with 9% abv can seem pretty intimidating, but don't be fooled; this is an extremely drinkable beer. Brewed with fresh, local ingredients, the balance of flavors in this beer is a real testament to the skill that went into making it.

Most "coffee" beers are overloaded with roasted coffee flavor. Brewers most likely assume that if someone orders a coffee porter they want to be hit in the face with coffee bean flavor. North River shows much more restraint, using the coffee in just the right amount to not overpower the other ingredients, but to complement them.

This is the first coffee porter I've had that I could see myself coming back to again and again. It's not a novelty coffee beer, it's a well crafted porter that benefits from the smart use of coffee as an ingredient.

Just 6 months in operation, North River has already gained a loyal following. Their unique tasting room in Wappingers Falls is set up for sampling, and much like in a traditional German Biergarten, parents are welcome to bring their kids along.
