61-Year Old Man Walks 35 Miles to Work to Support Sick Wife
Some might think getting stuck in a bit of traffic, or missing the bus is the worst part about their commute. Well, this 61-year old Iowa man walks 35 miles to work to support his sick wife.
Steven Simoff, who makes $9.07 an hour as an overnight janitor at a casino, leaves his basement apartment at 3:30 p.m. so he can begin his shift at 11 p.m.
Occasionally people will stop along the interstate and give him a ride, and he is able to hitch a ride most of the way home with a co-worker.
He told a local newspaper, as reported by Woman's Day:
First of all, when you got a family, and you've got a job, you've got to be able to support your family. And you've got to keep your job — the most two important things I can think of. If I don't get to work, bills don't get paid. As long as my two feet are good and my health is good.
Simoff lives with his wife, who suffered a stroke nine years ago, and has also had a couple of heart attacks. The couple also live with their adopted 22-year old grandson, who is unemployed.
They cannot afford to move closer and pay more than their current $400 a month rent. They do have a car, but can rarely afford to put gas in it. Simoff goes through a pair of sneakers every two months.
He does this all for the love of his family.
This is similar to a story last month about a 56-year old man who walked 21 miles to work everyday. That man received a new car and donations from a Go Fund Me campaign.
