A 58 foot whale, with large bite marks, washed up on a beach near the campgrounds of Smith Point County Park on Long Island. Kim Durham of the Riverhead Foundation said the fin whale was discovered on the beach last week in an advanced stage of decomposition. A rather large set of bite marks was found on the animal, indicating that a shark or other sea animals had fed on the carcass before it washed ashore. Marine biologists at the Riverhead Foundation performed a necropsy and said that the whale was more than likely struck by a boat. Fin whales are the second largest whales on Earth, and can grow to 85 feet and weigh up to 80 tons.
