Conde Nast Traveler recently put out their list of the top 10 friendliest and unfriendliest cities.  4 of the 10 unfriendliest are right in our area.

The list is based on Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Survey which asked subscribers to rank cities in a number of categories including friendliness.

In our area, Albany came in as the 7th unfriendliest (also 29th unfriendliest city in the world).  Readers claimed that the city was "dull" and "not so nice".  Participants also advised others to stay away from Albany in the winter.  Atlantic City, NJ came in 5th, being perceived as a poor man's Vegas.  On reader wrote that AC was "a dump, and you certainly don't want to wander very far off the boardwalk especially at night".  Even worse that Atlantic City, however was New Haven, CT.  Ranked as the 3rd unfriendliest city in the country (7th in the world), the home of Yale University is perceived as extremely rude and full of unfriendly citizens.

For the most unfriendly city in the country, and the world for that matter, we have to return to New Jersey.  Newark handily makes the top of both lists.  To be fair, most readers were only familiar with the city while visiting the airport.  However, most people who ventured further in to the city were extremely disappointed with the lack of friendliness.

If you're looking for friendly cities, you'll have to look to the South.  The top five were:

  1. Charleston, South Carolina
  2. Savannah, Georgia
  3. San Antonio, Texas
  4. Telluride, Colorado
  5. New Orleans, Louisiana

So what do you think?  Does the Northeast have a bad reputation for a reason or did the survey get it wrong?  Let us know in the comments section below.
