The herd of goats that have been eating weeds beneath the Walkway over the Hudson completed their task this week. The New York State Bridge Authority hired Green Goats from Rhinebeck as a new way to eliminate weeds in hard-to-reach places beneath the former railroad bridge.

Not only did the goats remove weeds, but they also got rid of poison ivy, sumac, and anything else they could reach.  According to the Times Herald Record, the 10-week contract with Green Goats cost $10,440, which is about half what the authority would typically spend on normal seasonal cure.

Good news for the many Dutchess County residents who often would stop and watch the goats at work, the goats could be back in the future. In a statement, New York State Bridge Authority Executive Director, Joseph Ruggiero said the goats did an outstanding job and will be considered for additional projects next year.
