A 1-year-old child sustained serious head injuries after the child was hit by a car.

Friday afternoon members of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Ellenville Rescue Squad responded to Tamarack Road in the Town of Wawarsing for the report of a child struck by a vehicle.

Police say the child, who is 20-months old, sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.

A preliminary investigation by authorities revealed the child ran into the path of a 2007 Honda Odyssey that was traveling at a low speed on a driveway. Before the accident, the child was with the parents near the side of the driveway, between two buildings, when the child ran from them and was hit.

Police haven’t reported any charges at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
